Beta Theta Pi Fraternity Closes Chapter at Nova Southeastern University
OXFORD, OHIO, December 20, 2019 – Beta Theta Pi is announcing today the closure and disbandment of its chapter at Nova Southeastern University following years of operational, financial and recruitment difficulties
This difficult decision largely stems from the chapter’s inability to consistently recruit and retain members, which led Zeta Mu to fall behind in a number of operational areas critical to creating a positive, viable Beta experience. At the time of closure, the chapter had failed to bring in new members for three consecutive semesters, leaving total chapter size at only four men and chronically struggling to attend leadership development programming, properly perform the ritual, maintain good financial standing, and achieve the minimum GPA standards required of a Beta chapter.
“Advisors, university representatives, Administrative Office staff members and undergraduates worked hard over the years to clearly communicate what needed to change for Beta to be successful at Nova Southeastern,” said Fraternity General Secretary S. Wayne Kay, Virginia Tech ’73. “Although these efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, they were, no doubt, significant and sincere. In the case of Zeta Mu, thankfully there was not an overwhelming, catastrophic incident that led us to this decision, but rather operational challenges which clearly signaled the chapter was not capable of becoming self-sustaining in either size or support.”
Founded in 1997 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Zeta Mu is home to some 200 living alumni. The chapter’s charter will remain suspended and in care of the Board of Trustees throughout this period of disbandment.
